Subject:Port Flushing

I have had a port in my right chest area since 2005 with no problems.  I get it flushed every month.  Is it safe to keep up with this procedure until I am considered cured(5 years out)?

Subject:Port Flushing

While a patient has a port-a-cath in place, it should be maintained at least once a month by getting it flushed.  It is important to do this to assure the port remains functional.  Though there is a risk of infection with anything foreign in ones body, it is acceptable to keep a port in place long term.  Your monthly flushes are the right thing to do to maintain your port.
