While a patient has a port-a-cath in place, it should be maintained at least once a month by getting it flushed. It is important to do this to assure the port remains functional. Though there is a risk of infection with anything foreign in ones body, it is acceptable to keep a port in place long term. Your monthly flushes are the right thing to do to maintain your port.
