Clinical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology)

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center School of Health Sciences has designed a program to prepare the student for a challenging and exciting career as a clinical laboratory scientist (medical technologist).

This one-year program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

A Career as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist

If you enjoy laboratories associated with your science courses and you have a desire to be part of the health care team, then clinical laboratory science will open a challenging career with limitless possibilities.

Whatever the interest of the individual, job opportunities abound for qualified clinical laboratory scientists, as diverse testing sites increase, the population ages, and highly specialized testing procedures are developed.

Salary

According to a recent article in a professional journal, the starting salary for entry-level clinical laboratory scientists ranges between $37,000 to $40,000. The average salary for a laboratory supervisor is $48,000 and for a laboratory manager $59,000.

Description of the Program

The Program in Clinical Laboratory Science is a 12-month, highly intensive course of study in preparation for national certification as a clinical laboratory scientist.

For each area of study you will receive classroom lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and technical experience.

Curriculum

Because The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer centers in the world, many special areas of instruction can be presented, such as steroid receptor, tumor markers, bone marrow interpretation, flow cytometry, and molecular techniques.

The Program includes the following topics:

  • Clinical Coagulation
  • Clinical Hematology and Cytogenetics
  • Clinical Biochemistry and Instrumentation
  • Clinical Microbiology: Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Mycology
  • Clinical Microbiology: Virology and Serology
  • Immunohematology
  • Urinalysis
  • Molecular Genetics Technology
  • Immunology: Flow Cytometry and Histocompatibility Testing
  • Capstone Seminar
  • Special Topics
    • Laboratory Mathematics
    • Management and Education Skills
    • Computer Technology
    • Research Seminar
    • Phlebotomy Principles

Upon successful completion of our Program you will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree or Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to take the national certification exams.
