Medical Dosimetry

Radiation oncology is a health care discipline that uses ionizing radiation for the treatment of cancer and allied diseases.

Radiation therapy, one of the three major modalities used in cancer management, is part of the treatment regimen for more than half of all cancer patients.

At The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center School of Health Sciences, the Program in Medical Dosimetry is designed to prepare students for the technical, theoretical and psychological aspects of this career.

Description of the Medical Dosimetry Program

The Program in Medical Dosimetry is sponsored by M. D. Anderson's School of Health Sciences and is supported by the Department of Radiation Physics within the Division of Radiation Oncology.

The Division's clinical, office and research facilities occupy more than 77,000 square feet, of which 12,000 square feet are used for treatment rooms.

As M. D. Anderson is one of the largest cancer centers in the world, its Department of Radiation Oncology treats more than 3,500 new patients annually. The Program uses these resources to enhance the students' experience, both didactically and clinically.

Curriculum

Didactic classes include:

  • Orientation to Radiation Oncology
  • Topographic Anatomy
  • Aspects of Radiation Therapy
  • Physics for Medical Dosimetrists
  • Scientific Paper and Poster Presentation
  • Oncology Pathology
  • Brachytherapy Theory and Practice
  • Radiation Biology
  • Radiation Safety and Protection

Please see the Health Sciences Student Catalog for a review of the objectives of the M. D. Anderson Program in Medical Dosimetry. The review concludes with a description of the clinical experience.

In addition, the Catalog contains more information about curriculum and course descriptions.
