| Comments (1)

Ronald DePinho, M.D., begins his presidency of MD Anderson today, Thursday, Sept. 1.

"To eliminate cancer around the world - what could be a more clear and noble mission? Cancer is a daunting foe and too many people still succumb to it. Your many discoveries and extraordinary advances in care have moved the entire field forward over the past 70 years, " DePinho said Thursday in a message to MD Anderson employees. "While much work remains in the lab, the clinic, the classroom, the community and the world, MD Anderson has the people, commitment and resources to conquer this dreaded disease. We will make that happen.

I intend to focus on where the greatest new opportunities lie for us, especially in basic science, in science-driven clinical care, and in education. And I will help you build upon the expertise, compassion and quality of our immense and unmatched clinical operation. I also will not shrink from the task of preparing MD Anderson for continued achievement in a challenging economic climate and era of health care reform."

DePinho is internationally recognized for basic and translational research in cancer, aging and age-associated degenerative disorders. He's the fourth full-time president of MD Anderson.

DePinho succeeds John Mendelsohn, M.D., who remains on MD Anderson faculty, returning to clinical and translational research as co-director of a new Institute for Personalized Cancer Therapy.

Very pleased to see who is going to be continuing the MDA standards and reputation. Lisa and Jerry Ennis: Congratulations to Dr. DePinho! WE LOVE MDA! 2 years my precious husband finished his last treatment from stage 4 Lymphoma. No finer place in the world, ALWAYS meet someone there that is a real miracle. So glad they did not give up on him like 2 other hospitals did! We wiil always be grateful to the folks that work there, from the top to the bottom! ....It is a very specail place. ♥ HUGS ♥ and Blessings Dr. De Pinho! Lisa K Patton: WELCOME! Because og M.D. Anderson I am a thirty-nine year survivor. I first went to MDA wh n I was four and a half with little hope of making it past my nineth birthday. Because of the great work done there I am now forty-three years old. There have been lots of ups and downs during the thirty-nine years of survivorship, but I am still here. Because of all M. D. Anderson has done for me I now voluenteer and am a committee chair on the Cattlemen for Cancer Reseach Committee that helps fund research at MDA. We would love to see you at our silent auction and cattle auction in Bastrop, Texas on October 15th. Bill A. Brown: Welcome to the MDA Family Dr. DePinho! My mother was at MDA in the 60's, when it was just a pink granite building and free parking. Now, I have been a patient since May '08. MDA gave my mother Life during her time at MDA, allowing her to experience my graduation from HS, joining the Marines, Marriage and birth of her first grand daughter in Feb. '77...all of which were not suppose to happen based on her cancer. But, as stated above, the doctors, nurses and all the staff, never gave up, which gave my mother the strength needed, along with her strong faith! I have relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma, and just like my mom, my doctors (Dr. Shah-Myelome Clinic & Dr. Qazilbash-Stem Cell Clinic) continue to find ways to give me the Time myeloma patients hope they can achieve. I sincerely wish you the very best Dr. DePinho, and know you will continue the traditions of Excellent Care and Research that is the Hallmark of MD Anderson. I will continue doing my part through clinical trials, hoping to help find a cure for myeloma, and benefit other cancers as well. God Bless you and I will keep you in my prayers!
