Internationally Renowned Myeloma Physician and Researcher Joins Division of Cancer Medicine... ( More... )
The mission of the Division of Cancer Medicine is to eliminate cancer and allied diseases through integrated programs in patient care, research, education, and prevention. The Division of Cancer Medicine is striving to make progress to realize this mission, as the division builds strong partnerships with the other M. D. Anderson divisions as well as with other cancer centers nationally and internationally to develop more effective therapies that are targeted to each patient’s unique disease profile.
M. D. Anderson has ten National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORES), more than any other institution nationally, and Division of Cancer Medicine faculty are investigators in all of them. The Division of Cancer Medicine has numerous mutually beneficial collaborative relationships internationally, among them, the Institut Gustave-Roussy in France, Imperial College London, and the International Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine for Cancer In Shanghai, China, cooperative efforts that ultimately benefit patients with a wide array of cancer diseases by strengthening the capacity to develop effective, evidence-based treatments.
Many of the most effective cancer treatments now available around the world—for example, Gleevec for leukemia, Tarceva for lung cancer, and Herceptin for breast cancer, Iressa, Erbitux, Avastin, Taxotere, Taxol, and many others—were originally investigated through clinical trials by Division of Cancer Medicine faculty members. Division investigators are now making appreciable progress in extending survival and improving quality of life for patients with the most difficult to treat tumors such as head and neck cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, and many challenging but rare tumors. The Division of Cancer Medicine faculty are also actively engaged in research driven patient care through our multidisciplinary care centers in collaboration with faculty from other disciplines to offer the most integrative approaches to cancer treatment and prevention. Our research programs are on the forefront of cancer research in immunotherapy and vaccine development, personalized medicine, drug discovery, palliative care, and cancer prevention. Our Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program offers unparalleled opportunities in patient care and translational research. Dr. Hong cordially invites you to take a tour of the patient care, research, and educational activities offered by the Division of Cancer Medicine, its departments, cancer treatment centers, and innovative programs.
