In reviewing the weight history of pancreatic cancer patients across their life spans, researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have determined that a high body mass index in early adulthood may play a significant role in an individual developing the disease at an earlier age.

The study also found that patients who are obese the year before diagnosis have a poorer outcome than those who are not.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men and women in this country. It is a highly lethal disease - according to the American Cancer Society, more than 42,470 persons will be diagnosed and 35,240 will likely die from the disease in 2009. The median survival for patients with the disease is less than 10 months and the five-year survival rate is less than five percent.

On June 11, 2009, the Senate passed legislation that will give federal officials the power to regulate cigarettes and other tobacco products. The legislation enables the Food and Drug Administration to enforce strict controls on the making and advertising of harmful tobacco products.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that this new law will decrease youth smoking by as much as 11% and adult smoking by 2% in the next 10 years. This law would also give the F.D.A. the right to impose stricter standards that could lessen the amount of nicotine and control the chemicals in cigarettes. Most kinds of tobacco flavoring is also banned by this law, which could make tobacco products taste so bad it deters users, especially first time users.

The marketing of tobacco products is also being restricted by this new legislation. Store displays and ads will only be allowed in black-and-white text as opposed to the colorful ads currently used. Beginning in 2010, all outdoor ads within 1,000 feet of a school or playground will be illegal. Tobacco companies will also be required to stop using terms such as "light" or "low tar" by next year and by 2012 the law requires large health warnings on their packages.
