"The Light Within: The Extraordinary Friendship of a Doctor and Patient Brought Together by Cancer," by Lois M. Ramondetta and Deborah Rose Sills.

Dr. Ramondetta, a gynecological oncologist at MDACC, struggles to balance a need for professional detachment and a desire to connect with her patients, many of whom are facing certain death. She strikes a relationship with one extraordinary patient, Ms. Sills, a professor of religion with a flair for life, and together they explore the role of faith and spirituality in medicine. As the two women try to come to grips with "the mystery of mortality," the book alternates between the physician's words and those Ms. Sills wrote before she died in 2006. The book can be difficult to read at times, as Ms. Sills faces the painful treatments with no hope of improvement and the knowledge that her children and husband will move on without her. But her training in the religions of the world also gives her the resources to understand the importance of living in the present. The message the authors deliver is simple: Focus on your life, the time you have left, and the survivors you leave behind.

How the Hospital Chaplain Helped Me Through a Health Crisis

Excerpt: "When the chaplain arrived in Moses' room, she was just what I needed: someone wearing normal clothes (not scrubs), who sat with me and asked about Moses, and about me, and said a little prayer with us. I am Muslim, and she was not, but it didn't seem to matter. I found myself in tears, at last able to express emotions the hospital drama had somehow paralyzed."

MDACC Staff Bid Farewell and Best Wishes to Respected Colleague

Douglas B. Evans, M.D. has worked as a surgical oncologist in the Gastrointestinal Center and P5 inpatient unit. He is known by his colleagues as a man who is driven to excellence and his patients' best interests in improving their quality of life. All of P5 staff are very fond of him and wish him well as he begins the next chapter in his medical career.

A Tribute to Douglas B. Evans, M.D.

It is hard to let him go and it is hard for him to say good bye.
But, there is time for every season.
For twenty years, he has touched so many lives
through this great institution, "M. D. Anderson Cancer Center."

Countless patients come from the East to the West;
and from the South to the North.
They speak many languages, yet they only understand his caring language,
"Knowing his patients by their own names."

He is a gracious man and his deeds speak for themselves:
numerous hours in the operating room;
hardly any lunch break while seeing patients in the clinic;
yet, he looks after his patients in the unit following his full day in surgery.

While he has profound gifts in medical science,
his inner spirit proclaims his "loving heart and caring hands."
He listens to his patients' concerns.
He uses his heart, mind and hands to address his patients' needs.
Expressions of thanksgiving in words and prayers
have attested patients' spiritual connections with him.

With his generosity and hospitality he welcomes all staff.
It is with a feeling of disheartenment that they say good bye to him.
But, it is with grateful hearts and praises that they remember him.
It is with great joy that they pray and wish him well.
May he continue to touch many more lives wherever he goes
and may his family be blessed, too.

Our love, best wishes and prayers are with you, Dr. Evans.
