I am a 69 year old male. Had prostate cancer surgery in 2003. After the surgery, I have had good readings of my PSA. However, a month ago, my urologist told me that the PSA had been rising (last reading was 0.03). He said that this meant a recurrence of the cancer and he wants me to have External Beam Radiation, 5 days per week for two months. Anyone has any information on this situation which can be of help to me. Frankly, I am somewhat scared since I thought that almost 5 years after the surgery, I had the cancer licked. Please, help.tongue

I definitly would get a second opinion. I have prostate cancer my last reading was also .03 and has been rising. I had TOMO thereapy radiation and unfortunately it is still there. The oncologist (UW Wisconsin) has me waiting, I do not have the option of radiation any more since it was done. When I did have it done I had 28 sessions. The most I have heard of is 40 but that has to be left to the doctor. When I had the radiation it has caused irrital bowl and I have another pill for that now. When I did have the radiation the UW protected  my anus with an insert. As humiliating as that was and towards the end painful, I had a friend who did not have that done and he is looking at some very difficult decisions like going in a bag. ,03  is so small they will not be able to see anything so it is a guess but most likely is at the source. I will ultimately have to have my testosterone blocked and that is not something I want but we do what we have to. Questions to ask.

If I do nothing what is the time line?

Can this be stopped with Lupron? (testosterone blocker)

How large an are are you irradiating?

Why so many doses?

Would he mind if you got another opinion?

What can you tollerate for an up level PSA. that is a question for yourself. At some point the cancer will stop being small and become large enough to attach itself. Even if I wait that long and  have that removed if possible it is in my Lymph system and will continue to show up. So again What level does he and you think are bottom line.

I pray for God's help in all this.

Thanks for your response. I just finished my first week of External Beam Radiation. I like the radiation oncologist. He is a young man of Vietnamese descendent. I am being treated at one of the "state of the arts" facility in Houston, Texas. As you may know, Houston has the best facilities for cancer treatment in the nation, perhaps the world. I am confident that my cancer recurrence will be eliminated with the 40 radiation sessions. I am being radiated with the latest machines, IMRT and the oncologist is highly optimist that I will be OK. I hope you are doing well and that everything turns out OK for you.

Next Thursday (11/13/08) will be my last radiation treatment. The treatment has gone well. Although I have had some side effects, the side effects have been tolerable - a stomach upset, increading urgency and frequency in urination, etc. However, compared to anything else, side effects have been a breeze. I also discovered that there is web site that has videos on prostate cancer. Very good site at Prostate Videos.com Home. I am also beginning to attend the meetings of the US Too support group. Very interesting and encouraging. The only thing I am concerned now is what happens next.... what if my PSA continues to rise? If so, I would probably have to have hormone therapy which has some not so nice side effects like hot flashes, etc. Also, how long will I survive after the radiation if this method does not get rid of the cancer? Hoping for the best. smile

Congrats on almost completing your XRT treatment!   Your questions about the future are shared by a number of folks nearing the end of treatment as it can certainly be a challenging time.  I'm glad to hear that you are connected with a support group that can help you during these tough times.

smileHi. I am glad to report that the PSA test taken in December, after I underwent 38 treatments of external beam radiation came out allright. The PSA was 0.0006 which according to my urologist, is a negligible level and appears that my recurrance was halted in time. Thanks ... I will keep you posted of any activity.

Again, I had another PSA test in April 09 and the result was 0.007. That's good and my urologist and radiologist feel that I am doing just great....!!

In July of 2009, I had another PSA test. The result was 0.003. Great news! Hopefully I won't have to worry about this condition anymore.

What is the support group you are referring to? My brother, age 50, was newly diagnosed,is having a second opinion,  May 14,at MDanderson, he is from New York, out of town, I live here in Houston.  I can tell he is overwhelmed, indecisive and feels doomed.

Hi jaymonkey,

Good question!  Us TOO! is a prostate cancer support organization that has chapters and group meetings in many places.

I have heard that the group's name, US TOO!, was a response to the name of a support group for breast cancer patients and survivors, called WHY ME?  Here is a link to their website:

http://www.ustoo.org/

Please let us know if there is any other way thatwe can help you and your brother.

Best Regards,

Hi - I am a gleason 10 stage 4 and am probably doomed - but not today!  I had a radical prostectomy at MDA in 2008.  Chemo follow up was effective for about a year and psa - always low - started to rise.  I had further surgery at mda in 2010 to remove rapidly growing tumors.  Also had two stomas installed.  I keep waiting for someone to tell me to shove it up my ass so I can say "sorry, I can't help you."  I had radiation with the surgery.  I took Zytiga which was effective for a while and am now in a provence program.  I have had no pain - except for post op - and since recovery period have traveled etc.  The status quo is quite good, but what comes after provence?  They tell me more options are coming out every month.  Good luck to your brother.   Bill
