Subject:Partial or radical nephrectomy

I am scheduled for a partial nephrectomy in a couple of weeks.  My Mom had a radical nephrectomy 12 years ago and is convinced it is the best way to go.  A couple of well-meaning friends also side with Mom.  I'm still leaning towards the partial but have concerns because the benchmark seems to be 4cm or less and the growth on my kidney has been described as between 5.8 and 6.95cm.  Any advice from experience?

Hi Anonymous,

 It is hard to be torn between the opinions of people whom you respect and care about.  Perhaps you can schedule an appointment with your medical team to discuss the pros and cons of partial vs. total nephrectomy in your particular situation. Another idea is to pose this question to: www.mdanderson.org/departments/infoline/
