My 23-year-old son was diagnosed 10 days ago with Stage IV renal cancer, metastasized to the bones of his spine, and possibly (probably) at least 1 lymph node. Our shock and grief are inexpressible. He's undergoing targeted radiation therapy to ease pain and to shrink the bone tumors that are pressing on his spinal cord and causing neurological symptoms (ultimately, paralysis if untreated). When that's over, his team of doctors is contemplating chemotherapy and if he responds well, possibly a nephrectomy. A frightening outlook for such a young person. We have an integrated therapy plan that includes the oncology treatments noted above, plus a diet/nutrition plan, herbal supplements, mind-body therapy, and gentle exercise. Any comments or suggestions from others with Stage IV RCC would be most welcome.
My sweet 56 year old husband has renal cell too. It was detected in Feb 08. Right kidney removed in Feb 08 and in partial lung removed in Nov 08. it was a shock to us as well. He has been with Dr. Amato in Houston on a Nexivar study with great results. I will just say that we trust the Lord to help us daily and without that it would be impossible to continue. Ray has a great quality of life and we are praying that the medications are resumed quickly as he recovers from surgery. There has been such sucess in treatment in recent years. What you are feeling is right on track and I will say it helps to know there are others living through the same issues you are going through now. God bless you. We will keep you in our prayers. Listen to KSBJ 89.3. it brings us comfort, especially at night.
It sounds like you have a very good treatment plan going. I am 53 years old and was diagnosed with stage IV renal cell carcinoma 12 years ago. I underwent a radical right nephrectomy to remove the tumor which had invaded the renal vein. I remained cancer free for ten years and two years ago had a few spots show up in the lung. I was sent to a thoracic surgeon and those spots were removed. I just recently found that I have a few very slightly enlarged lymph nodes in the abdomen area that are being watched. I am in very good health and live a great quality of life. So far have not had any other treatment than surgery but may be looking into that soon. I wish your son the very best. He is in good hands with M.D. Anderson. Don't ever lose faith and look to the Lord for his comfort in helping you get through each day and the healing of your son.
