Subject:Catheters

In 2007, I was dx with metastatic urethral CA.  I chose the Indiana pouch as my urinary diversion option.  My entry is through my navel.  Currently I catheterize myself every 4 hours using sterile red rubber catheters.  This expense exceeds $1000 a year.  To help reduce this expense, I explored the option of reusing my catheters.  First technique: I washed the catheters in hot soapy water, rinsed, and then allowed to air dry.  About 10 days later, I developed a UTI.  Second technique: I soaked catheters overnight in hydrogen peroxide, rinsed in hot water, and air dried.  About 7 days later, I developed another UTI.

I welcome any proven method of cleaning used catheters.  If you have been successful in reusing catheters and you have a proven cleaning method, please share your experience with me.

Warmest regards, Karen

Dear Karen,

There are a few programs that may be able to help you financially with ostomy supplies:

Best of luck,
